How can one describe a chilled clear Texas morning? Those of us that have enjoyed them know what they are, otherwise words fail. Take one of those blue sky mornings and wrap it around a true oasis in the Texas Hill Country. What do you get – a little slice of heaven. Like many of the most memorable hunts, it started at a SCI banquet, we bid on the incredibly generous donation by Joshua Creek of a mixed bag bird hunt for two hunters.
Time was running out, the season ended only days away, Richard Allen of Joshua Creek, the Marketing Director, went the extra mile to get us booked. The ranch is beautiful – a crystal clear blue river pool – home to huge rainbow trout. As I stood on the bluff 50 feet above the pool I could see them lazily swimming below. Beyond, out in the field, I saw 4 wild pheasant darting in the early morning grass. Picture perfect; we completed our hunter safety test and watched their safety video, then it was out to the fields. I didn’t know what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by the thickness and height of the grasses. A naturally flowing stream cut through the hunting area, as well as some nice large trees. Our hunting dog loved Joshua Creek – the only true measure of a hunting preserve. We had mixed bag of pheasant, chukar and quail – amazing hunting. They flew suddenly; they flew fast, and flew hard – exactly like hunting wild birds. The dogs were exceptional; we hunted over English Setters with our lab – Keya – going in for the flush.
It was fast and furious; the weather was crisp and perfect. We counted our birds; we had ample shots and a great time. They served an exceptional lunch at the lodge out on the veranda overlooking a beautiful century old pecans grove. The meal was an excellent field salad followed by gourmet pheasant pot pie – the sporting good life. I could live like that year round. Thanks to Joshua Creek for their exceptional donation, many thanks to Richard Allen – former President of Dallas Safari Club – for an exceptional end of year hunt, and – yes – he will most definitely see us next year. You know what – call us we will put together a club hunt for the fall – great times, great food, great hunting!
